Identity theft

This section tells you exactly what to do if you have been a victim of identity theft, and guides you through the process of restoring your identity.

Identity theft happens when someone impersonates you for financial or some other gain. This is a crime where the criminal gets enough of your personal information to enable them to impersonate you in financial and other transactions.

You might be the victim of identity theft if things like the following happen to you:

  • You receive a letter from a collection agency demanding that you pay past due accounts for a large mobile phone bill, but you don't have an account with that mobile company.
  • The bank refuses to grant you a loan because of your history of bad payments, even though you've never been in arrears with any payments.
