Your legal responsibility to inform and train employees

Your legal responsibility
You must give your employees clear and relevant information about the fire risks to them identified in the fire risk assessment, the steps taken to prevent or reduce those risks, and the competent people you've appointed to implement fire safety procedures.
You must provide adequate safety training when they're first employed and whenever risks change, new equipment or technology is introduced, or responsibilities shift.
This training should include the precautions and actions they should take to protect themselves and others on the premises. It should be repeated periodically, updated to reflect any new or changed risks, delivered in a manner appropriate to the risks identified in the risk assessment, and conducted during working hours.
A fire action notice and evacuation and assembly point maps must be displayed prominently in the workplace where staff and others are likely to see them in the event of a fire.
You should also consult and actively involve staff in identifying additional fire safety hazards and in determining appropriate measures to mitigate or eliminate those risks.
Which laws apply?
- The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005
- The Fire and Rescue Services (Northern Ireland) Order 2006
